Installing, maintaining and repairing pipes in commercial buildings such as apartment complexes and residential houses is the job you’ll be doing as a plumber. Also, you will need to work with other experts in the building, like general contractors, to ensure that construction or renovations are completed promptly.
Plumbers are responsible for:
- Planning the layout of the waste disposal, plumbing and water supply systems through reading diagrams and plans.
- Pipes and tubes must be cut, assembled and erected with the care of the infrastructure (e.g. electrical wiring).
- Maintaining and installing systems to supply water.
Your Responsibilities as a Plumber

- Take a look at blueprints and drawings to plan or understand the arrangement of the plumbing, waste disposal, and water supply systems.
- Install, cut, and assemble tubes and pipes with care to the infrastructure in place (e.g. electrical wiring)
- Set up and manage water distribution systems.
- Find and fix problems related to pipelines for water (e.g. leaks)
- Repair or replace broken drainage lines, clogged drains, faucets etc.
- Repair household appliances (e.g. washers) or fixtures (e.g. sinks) etc.
- Install and maintain liquid and gas heating equipment (air-conditioning equipment, radiators, etc.)
- Install sanitary and waste functional disposal systems. DWV systems.

Specific Skills
Determine the requirements for piping systems and pipe sizing. Cut, measure or thread pipes according to the required size and shape; Study blueprints, specifications, drawings, and plans to determine the layout of the plumbing system as well as water supply networks and drainage and waste systems. Install, maintain and repair industrial, commercial or domestic pipes and plumbing systems. Mark the positions of lines, pipe connections, passageways and fixtures in floors and walls, cut openings in floors and walls to accommodate pipe and fittings; join pipes with clamps, couplings, screws, bolts, cement brazing, soldering and welding equipment. Check lines for leaks with water pressure gauges and air gauges.
